This Mother’s Day marks the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. This is a day on which the whole Church will be united in prayer that more men and women will answer God’s call to be the visible face of the Good Shepherd in Vancouver and around the world. Each one of us is called to “lay down our lives” for Christ and one another. This Good Shepherd Sunday, please join Catholics throughout our Archdiocese in praying for more vocations to the priesthood and to consecrated life. As well, please prayerfully consider a gift in support of the second collection for vocations which helps fund the promotion of priestly and religious vocations, accompaniment of those who are actively discerning, and education of seminarians in our Archdiocese.
A Love to Be Trusted
On this Mother’s Day weekend, let me tell you a story about the memories of mothers’ love. “When I was 6 years old, I was petrified of spending the first day at school in kindergarten. In the illogical way that children sometimes think, I had convinced myself that if my mother left me at school, she would forget to come back for me. My mother protested. ‘Honey,’ she said, ‘You are the most important person in my life. I would never forget to come back for you.’ But her words gave me no comfort. Finally, in desperation, my mother took off her wedding ring. ‘Look,’ she said, ‘This is the most valuable thing I own. It has a diamond on it, and it is a sign of your father’s love for me. Take it and put it in your sock. If you doubt whether I am going to come back for you, know that I will come back for that ring.’ I took it and it worked. All during that first day of school as I began to panic, I felt the ring in my sock, and I knew she would come back.”
At times, a mother’s love does crazy things like entrusting a six-year-old with a diamond ring to assure her that she was secure in her mother’s love. Jesus wants to assure us that we are secure in his love in today’s gospel. Using the image of the good shepherd he tells us that he holds us in his hand, and no one and no thing will ever be able to snatch us away from him. This is his promise to us, and we are to be attentive, to hear his voice.
But that’s not always easy. When someone we care about ends a relationship, when a person we love is lost through death, we feel empty and alone. We wonder will life ever begin again. Jesus tells us that he is with us, that he is our shepherd, and he will lead us to happiness and joy.
When things change in our family, in our world, or in our church, we can become frightened. We can lose hope, believing whatever new thing comes will never be as good as what once was. But Jesus tells us that he holds us close and that we will face the future together.
When we receive a diagnosis of a serious illness and must look forward to months of operations and treatments, when we notice how with advancing years our energy and our abilities are becoming less and less, we can become discouraged. We ask ourselves what kind of life I will have to lead. Jesus tells us: I am with you. I will give you eternal life. You will never perish.
Today’s gospel tells us that the very life of God flows within us, and that Jesus will never abandon us. He tells this to us in clear words. But sometimes words are not enough. And since Jesus has no wedding ring or other precious item to give to us, he gives us something more. He gives us himself in the Holy Eucharist. Happy Mother’s Day.

Between May the 9th and May the 13th, our St. Edmund Students will be participating in the Spring Walk-A-Thon. Proceeds from donations in support of our walkers will go to upgrading their playground so please be generous.

A Message from St. Anthony’s Parish - Sanctuary Mental Health Course For Catholics - With all that’s going on currently in our families, our community and globally, is there any one among us who isn’t suffering or knows someone who is struggling with mental health? The Sanctuary Course for Catholics is for anyone who wants to learn about faith and mental health. It requires no previous training or expertise—just a willingness to engage in dialogue with our faith community. The course is 8 sessions long and will be held on Mondays at 7:00 to 9:00 pm from May 9th to June 27th at St Anthony’s Parish Hall. Walkathon 2022
We're thrilled to bring back the St Edmunds annual Walk-a-thon!
Our spring walkathon is our largest student-led fundraising event. Students will be collecting pledges from supporters like you to go for walks in their neighbourhood with their class or with their families, all before the May long weekend.
We are appealing to you, your families and your friends to please pledge to your child's walk-a-thon campaign. All contributions will have a DIRECT impact on your child’s educational programs and activities.
This year, funds will go towards continuing to upgrade the playground, including resurfacing and painting the blacktop.
Thank you so much for supporting our students and our school! All gifts will receive a charitable tax receipt. For donations that are not done online, a pledge form and tax receipt request form will be sent home later this week.

“Walking with Hope” Walk-a-thon (May 9-13)
As we had to postpone our fall walkathon, we are excited to announce that the St. Ed’s Walkathon will take place during the week of May 9th. We are looking forward to walking around our neighbourhood community to continue promoting physical fitness and raise funds to enhance our playground area. We are calling on you, our parents, to play an essential role in this year’s Walkathon. Hard copies of the pledge forms have been sent home and you can also donate online.
Some important points to note:
• Our classes will be walking RAIN or SHINE around our neighbourhood (routes around Mahon Park and Victoria Park)
• You can send the following link for our Walkathon campaign to all your friends and family across North America: (St. Edmund’s School Walkathon) Tax receipts are emailed to you immediately for donations greater than $5 (within Canada only). This link will also be found on our school website.
Student Uniforms
Please ensure your child’s uniform meets the established requirements and that items are clean, in good condition and neatly pressed. School shoes are to be solid black with no markings. Hair accessories should be plain navy, black or the school tartan colour. Colourful hair bows and hairbands are reserved for non-uniform dress-down days and hair colour is to remain natural.
Summer uniform can now be worn. This is an option to our regular school uniform which can be worn all year. Boys have the option of wearing dress shorts and intermediate girls have the option of wearing the school skort. (Please refer to our uniform policy for further information.) Additionally, please remember that our school sweater is still required everyday at school.
School Safety & Gratitude
I would like to thank all the parents who have answered our call for extra help at our crosswalks! Your time and effort is much appreciated at morning drop-off and afterschool pick-up. You are the face to the rest of our community of the wonderful, caring school we have at St. Edmunds! We are still looking for additional crosswalk supervisors. Thanks as well to our Garden group for keeping our playground beautiful, safe and clean. You help make our school even more inviting!

Parish Education Committee (PEC) Elections
Notice is hereby given that elections to St. Edmund’s Parish Education Committee will take place on Sunday, May 29th, 2022
For the coming year, we need to elect (two) members from St. Edmund’s Parish for St. Edmund’s School Education Committee.
Eligible to nominate and to be nominated for election are all registered parishioners (Catholics living within our parish boundaries), over 21 years of age and Catholic non-parishioners who have been attending our parish upon written agreement of their proper canonical pastor. (Pastor Authorization Forms are available in the parish office).
Eligible to vote are:
Parishioners 19 years of age and a registered member of St. Edmund’s Parish
Your name must appear on the Parish list.
Members of registered families, whose name is not on the list, must contact the office, or register under their own name before the day of elections.
Nomination forms must be received in the parish office no later than May 16th by 4:00 p.m.
St. Edmund’s Parent Support Group (PSG)
The PSG is a necessary Parent Support Liaison Group between the school and the B.C. Gaming Commission who are responsible for application and expenditure of gaming funds that directly benefit students.
We are grateful for the efforts of Ms. Lo, Ms. Spring and Ms. Brauer in leading this group and directing funds to pay for school buses for our fieldtrips.

First Holy Communion
Everyone in our community is welcome to attend Mass at 2:00 on May 1st as our school and PREP students will be receiving their First Holy Communion.
Sacrament of Confirmation
We welcome Archbishop Michael Miller to St. Edmund’s as our Grade 7s will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 29th at 4pm

Track & Field – The St. Anthony’s Friars Track Meet was held on April 25th and we are so very proud of our team’s effort at this early meet! We are so very appreciative of the parents who helped drive our athletes and came to support the team! The CISVA Annual Meet (May 29 & June 5th) will be held at Swangard Stadium. We are continuing our morning practices at Mahon Park for all our athletes at this time; however, only those who qualify for their event will be attending the CISVA finals. More information will be provided in the next weeks.

Con Brio Whistler Music Festival Results
This past weekend saw STA's first overnight trip in three years with the Music Department attending the Con Brio Whistler Music Festival. The Grade 8, Junior and Senior Concert Bands earned Silver Awards; the Junior Jazz Ensemble a Silver Award and the Senior Jazz Ensemble a Gold Award. All students are to be commended for their exemplary conduct throughout the trip.
Royal Canadian Legion North Vancouver City Branch #118 Poster & Literary Contest Winners
A record number of 46 STA entries were submitted last November. STA had several winners across many categories, including first place awards for Video, Literary Essay, Literary Poems, and Black & White Poster and Colour Poster.
