Prayer for the Holy Father

Almighty ever-living God, eternal health of believers,

Who willed that our infirmities

Be borne by your Only-Begotten Son for our salvation,

Listen in kindness to our prayers

For your servant Francis, our Pope and Shepherd:

Grant him, we implore you, your merciful help,

So that he may be restored to your Church in good health,

Ever ready to serve the flock you have entrusted to his care.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

Who lives and reigns with you

In the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Second Collection: St. Joseph’s Society - March 8-9, 2025

A Message from Archbishop Miller

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I invite you to support our retired priests through the St. Joseph’s Society collection on Sunday, March 9. This annual appeal assists our retired clergy who have dedicated their lives to serving our local Church.

Throughout their years of priestly service, these men have celebrated the Sacraments, preached the Gospel, and accompanied you in times of joy and sorrow. In our Archdiocese, priests are responsible for saving for their own retirement through a pension plan administered by the St. Joseph’s Society. Their modest income means the Canada Pension Plan only contributes a small portion to their retirement allowance. Unexpected medical costs or long-term care can quickly deplete their savings.

While our retired clergy are no longer supported by a parish assignment, many of them continue to be active in their priestly ministry, offering the Sacraments and spiritual guidance to the faithful. This is a testament to their selfless desire to serve you and accompany you on your journey to heaven.

Your support ensures that our retired priests can live with dignity and security. The St. Joseph’s Society relies on your generosity to provide for their essential needs, including living arrangements and quality medical care.

I ask you to express your gratitude for our retired priests’ many years of service by contributing generously to the St. Joseph’s Society collection on Sunday, March 9.

With the assurance of my prayers for you and your families during this Lenten season, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+ J. Michael Miller, CSB

Apostolic Administrator, Archdiocese of Vancouver

Reflections

In the face of Temptation

In each of the three Synoptic Gospels, after his baptism, Jesus is reported to have spent forty days in the desert, fasting and praying. In Luke and in Matthew, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger, he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him, and he tempts Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the test. In each case, Jesus resists, citing words from Scripture to rebuke the devil's temptation.

Each temptation that Jesus faces offers insight into the spirituality we hope to develop as we keep the forty days of the Season of Lent. We can trust God to provide for our material needs. We worship God because God alone has dominion over us and our world. We can trust God to be faithful to his promises. Jesus' rejection of the devil's temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding himself on the Word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil by his confidence in God's protection and faithfulness.

This Gospel highlights for us one of the central themes of the Season of Lent. We are dependent upon God for all that we have and all that we are. Anything that leads us to reject this dependency or to distrust its sufficiency, is a temptation from the devil.

Luke ends his report of Jesus' temptation in the desert by noting that the devil departs for a time. The implication is that the devil will return. Jesus knows that he will be tempted again in the Garden of Gethsemane. The depth of Jesus' trust in God is shown most fully when Jesus rejects the temptation to turn away from the task God has given to him. Jesus' final rebuke of the devil is his sacrifice on the Cross.

Jesus' responses to the temptations of the devil teach us how we can respond to temptation. As we start our journey through Lent, this Sunday's Gospel calls us to adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God's word alone will suffice, God's promise of protection can be trusted, and God alone is God.

Archdiocese Notices & Events

Archbishop of Vancouver

Edmonton Archbishop Richard W. Smith has been appointed by Pope Francis as the next Archbishop of Vancouver, succeeding Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, whose retirement has been accepted by the Holy Father.

Archbishop Smith, 65, has led the Archdiocese of Edmonton since 2007 and has served in dioceses across Canada.

Archbishop Miller reached the age of 75 in 2021 and submitted his resignation to the Pope, as required by canon law. However, he was asked to remain in office until a successor was named. The Vatican announced this morning that Archbishop Smith will be the next shepherd of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, with Archbishop Miller continuing as Apostolic Administrator until the new Archbishop is installed as the 12th Archbishop of Vancouver, likely in May.

In a statement, Archbishop Smith said, “I am grateful to His Holiness for the confidence placed in me to assume this new mission, and ask for the assistance of your prayers.”
