Dear People of God, This coming Sunday, February 2, we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. "Candlemas" is another traditional name for this feast, as the custom of celebrating it with lighted candles dates back to the fifth century. The lit candles symbolize Simeon’s prophecy that Jesus would be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles." There will be a blessing of candles at all Masses, and you are welcome to bring your own. These blessed candles can be used for sacred purposes in your homes during daily prayers. May the light of Christ shine brightly in your families.
FIRST FRIDAY is on February 7th – Adoration begins after 9 am Mass (no 7:30 am Mass that day) followed by Benediction at 6:45 pm and Mass at 7 pm. A sign-up sheet is at the main Church entrance – it would be greatly appreciated if 2-3 people could sign up per time slot.

THE PRAYER ROOM

Jesus said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As you know, the charism of the Carmelites is rooted in prayer and community life. With this in mind, we are pleased to announce the opening of a new Prayer Room with the Blessed Sacrament in the Rectory, established in memory of Curtis James Dayton and sponsored by Marie Dayton.

We, the Carmelites and parishioners, are deeply grateful to Marie Dayton for this beautiful opportunity to grow closer to God in prayer. Her dedication and hard work have made this space possible, and we sincerely appreciate her generosity. We pray that the Lord may grant Curtis James Dayton eternal rest in peace and that this Prayer Room will be a place of solace and reflection for all who visit.

In a special way, we offer our heartfelt thanks to Marie Dayton for her tireless efforts. May the Lord bless her abundantly for her kindness and generosity.

At the same time, we are happy to announce that the inauguration and blessing of the prayer room will take place on February 2, 2025, immediately following the 11:00 AM Mass. The blessing will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Cannio, the Superior of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Community North Vancouver BC. The Prayer Room will be open to all parishioners Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM as of now.

To ensure that everyone has the opportunity and access to spend time in prayer, I will be sending out a sign-up sheet via Flocknote. Signing up will be necessary to reserve a time to visit the chapel. We encourage you to take advantage of this sacred opportunity for quiet reflection and spiritual renewal.

May this Prayer Room be a place of peace, prayer, and closeness to God for all who enter.

With gratitude and blessings,

Fr. Steny

Vandalism Incident

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I want to inform you about an unfortunate incident that took place on the night of January 18th, around 2:00 AM. An individual jumped the gate between the school and the rectory. Thankfully, no damage was done to any materials around the rectory or church. However, the individual did destroy the School Welcome Planters in the middle of the night.

We are grateful to the RCMP officers who responded quickly to the scene and pursued the individual responsible for the damage. We humbly ask that, if you happen to pass by the church or school, you keep an eye out and remain vigilant.

A special thanks to Diana and the RCMP for their diligent follow-up on the case. We are thankful for their support in handling this situation.

With prayers,

Fr. Steny

Reflections

A Light for Revelation to the Gentiles

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. The Presentation, which is celebrated 40 days after Christmas, is not mentioned in the other Gospels. Only Luke tells the story, most likely because he writes for Gentile Christians who are not familiar with the Jewish rite of presentation and purification. In addition, the intent of Luke’s Gospel is to show that God’s promise to Israel, fulfilled in Jesus, extends to Gentiles.

Luke recognizes Joseph and Mary as faithful Jews who bring Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Here they present their firstborn son to the Lord. Jesus is thus consecrated as required by the Law of Moses. Present in the temple at this time are Simeon and Anna. Both are awaiting the restoration of God’s rule in Israel.

Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see Christ the Lord, the Messiah, before he died. The holy man immediately recognized the infant Jesus as the promised Savior, a “light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Anna also recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of the promise of redemption and spoke about him to all.
